This year marked the fifth anniversary of Hook into Books™, Life Without Barriers’ inspiring annual celebration of children’s literature. The campaign highlights the power of reading to nurture imagination, support learning, and foster a lifelong love of books for children of all ages.
Children’s Rights Queensland, funded and supported by the Queensland Family and Child Commission and through revenue generated from the Children’s Rights Shop, was proud to support this initiative in 2025 by donating over 2,000 books, including a special selection of children’s rights resources. Over 1,600 books were provided to children and young people in out-of-home care. Through our contribution, every child involved in Hook into Books™ received a book of their choice alongside titles that introduce key concepts from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, such as I Am Me, The Right to Be Me, The Big Book of Rights, and The ABCs of Children’s Rights. These resources use simple language, engaging illustrations, and accessible explanations to help children understand and celebrate their rights.
“Our involvement in Hook into Books™ reflects our commitment to ensuring that every child has access not only to books, but to knowledge about their rights,” said CRQ President, Dan Marais.
“By combining the joy of reading with education about children’s rights, we can empower children to imagine, learn, and grow in an environment that supports their voice and wellbeing.”
In 2025, the program reached over 1,600 children and young people in out-of-home care and through the National Immigration Support Service (NISS). By helping to provide each child with their chosen book and a children’s rights resource, CRQ contributed to a program that sparks curiosity, promotes inclusivity, and celebrates diverse voices.
We are proud to continue supporting initiatives like Hook into Books™, where the love of reading meets the promotion of children’s rights. Together, we can help children discover stories that inspire, empower, and educate them about their rights.
