Conflict of Interest Policy

Purpose

The Children’s Rights Alliance Inc., trading as Children’s Rights Queensland (CRQ), is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. This policy ensures that any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest are identified and managed effectively to maintain public trust and the integrity of our work.

Commencement

This policy takes effect from January 2025 and supersedes all previous policies, whether documented or not.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Leadership Team
  • Executive
  • Employees
  • Contractors
  • Volunteers

The individuals above will be referred to as ‘Team Members’ throughout this policy.

Definitions

  • Conflict of Interest: A situation where a team member’s personal, financial, or other interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, their professional judgment or the integrity of CRQ’s work.
  • Actual Conflict: A direct conflict between personal interests and professional duties.
  • Potential Conflict: A situation where a conflict could arise in the future.
  • Perceived Conflict: A situation where it could reasonably appear to an external party that a conflict exists, even if no actual conflict is present.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Executive: Ensure compliance and provide strategic oversight.
  • Leadership Team: Identify, disclose, and manage conflicts of interest within the organisation.
  • Employees & Volunteers: Disclose any conflicts and adhere to the policy.
  • Contractors: Conduct risk assessments and maintain culturally safe environments.

Policy Statement

At Children’s Rights Queensland, we recognise that conflicts of interest may arise in the course of our work. All team members must:

  • Act in the best interests of CRQ at all times.
  • Disclose any actual, potential, or perceived when accepting a role or by emailing the President.
  • Refrain from participating in decisions where a conflict of interest exists.
  • Maintain transparency in all professional dealings and relationships.
  • Seek guidance when unsure whether a situation constitutes a conflict of interest.

Managing Conflicts of Interest

Upon disclosure of a conflict of interest, the Leadership Team will:

  1. Assess the nature and extent of the conflict.
  2. Determine appropriate actions to mitigate risks.
  3. Document all decisions and actions taken.
  4. Implement measures to manage or eliminate the conflict, including recusal from certain decisions or roles. 

Breaches of this policy

Non-compliance with this policy by any team member may result in investigations, corrective actions, disciplinary measures (e.g., warnings or termination), or reporting to relevant authorities. Breaches must be reported promptly to a member of the Children’s Rights Alliance Leadership Team.
