Modern Slavery Policy

Purpose

The Children's Rights Alliance Inc. trading as Children’s Rights Queensland (CRQ) is committed to ensuring, to the best of our ability, that modern slavery does not exist within any part of our operations or supply chain. We are dedicated to ethical business practices, integrity in all relationships, and promoting children’s rights by preventing any form of exploitation.

This policy outlines our commitment to eliminating modern slavery and ensuring that all team members, suppliers, and stakeholders uphold ethical and lawful standards in line with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Commencement

This policy takes effect from 1 July 2025 and supersedes all previous policies, whether documented or not.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Leadership Team
  • Executive
  • Employees
  • Contractors
  • Volunteers

The individuals above will be referred to as ‘Team Members’ throughout this policy.

Definitions

Modern slavery refers to situations where coercion, threats, or deception are used to exploit individuals and undermine their freedom. This includes:

  • Trafficking in persons
  • Slavery
  • Servitude
  • Forced labour
  • Forced marriage
  • Debt bondage
  • The worst forms of child labour
  • Deceptive recruiting for labour or services

The worst forms of child labour involve extreme exploitation, including enslavement, trafficking, or hazardous work. This does not refer to all forms of child work.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Leadership Team: Ensures compliance, provides strategic oversight, and integrates anti-slavery measures into governance frameworks.

  • Executive: Implements and monitors anti-slavery practices, including due diligence in supply chains and reporting obligations.

  • Employees and Volunteers: Promote child safety, uphold this policy, and report any concerns about modern slavery.

  • Contractors and Service Providers: Conduct risk assessments, provide culturally safe environments, and adhere to ethical sourcing and labour practices. 

Policy Statement

Children’s Rights Queensland is committed to:

  • Acting ethically and with integrity in all business dealings and relationships.
  • Ensuring modern slavery is not taking place within our organisation or supply chain.
  • Including prohibitions against forced, compulsory, or trafficked labour in contracts.
  • Expecting all suppliers, contractors, and partners to uphold ethical labour standards.
  • Conducting risk assessments to identify and address modern slavery risks.
  • Taking immediate action in response to any concerns raised about modern slavery.
  • Engaging with children, families, and communities to raise awareness of child rights and the impact of modern slavery.

Reporting and Compliance

All Team Members must report any concerns related to modern slavery. Reports should be made to a member of the Children’s Rights Alliance Leadership Team.

  • Failure to comply with this policy may result in:
  • Investigations and corrective actions
  • Disciplinary measures, including termination of employment or contracts
  • Reporting to relevant authorities, where required

Breaches of this policy

Non-compliance with this by any team member policy may result in investigations, corrective actions, disciplinary measures (e.g., warnings or termination), or reporting to relevant authorities. Breaches must be reported promptly to a member of the Children’s Rights Alliance Leadership Team.

Policy Status and Review

  • Approval: Approved by the Child Rights Alliance Inc. Leadership Team.
  • Review: This policy will be reviewed every two years. Feedback from children, families, and stakeholders will guide updates.
